Benicia Residents Encouraged To Start New Traditions This July 4

With fireworks illegal in the city and the usual Fourth of July events canceled, the Benicia Fire Department provides some suggestions.

BENICIA, CA — As Independence Day approaches, the Benicia Fire Department reminded residents that the sale and private use of fireworks is illegal in the city, including those labeled "safe and sane."

"Thousands of people are injured each year by fireworks around the Fourth of July," Benicia Fire Chief Josh Chadwick said. "Not only do fireworks present danger by potentially causing physical injuries, but they also can cause fires.

"With the devastating destruction of entire neighborhoods in recent wildfires, Benicia Fire Department is concerned with the potential for open space fires caused by the sparks generated from fireworks and reminds residents that ALL fireworks are illegal in Benicia."

Chadwick noted that while cancellation of the traditional Torchlight Parade, Picnic in the Park and fireworks display by Benicia Main Street and the City of Benicia is disappointing, it was an essential decision made to protect the health and safety of Benicia residents and visitors during the coronavirus pandemic.

"Please consider alternative, safely distanced activities," Chadwick said. "As a reminder, only residents of the same household should gather in distances of less than 6 feet."

Wondering what to do on the Fourth of July, and how to celebrate this year?

The Benicia Fire Department suggests these alternate, safe activities:

  • Virtual block parties: Flier your neighborhood with a Zoom party invitation
  • Watch "Hamilton" movie via the Disney+ streaming service starting July 3
  • Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show will be televised from 5 - 7 p.m. PST
  • Neighborhood Driveway Party — provide your own food and party in your driveway
  • Garage door driveway movies — Benicia Public Library has a selection of free movies through Kanopy to show with your outdoor movie projector on your garage door

And these crafts as an alternate to fireworks:

Happy Fourth of July, Benicia!
