CHP Invites Solano Area Teen Drivers, Parents To 'Start Smart'

BENICIA, CA — The California Highway Patrol Solano Area invites new teen drivers and their parents to attend an upcoming "Start Smart" class to be held online.

The class, which takes place 6 p.m- 8 p.m. May 21 on Zoom, is a review of the rules of the road for parents and provides important information to teens who are about to, or have recently, received their driver's license or permit.

Some video clips and related movies are shown to inform parents and their teens of the restrictions on young drivers.

"Statistics show that young drivers who have recently received their driver’s license are five times more likely to be involved in an accident than more seasoned, experienced drivers," CHP Officer David Harvey said. "Traffic collisions continue to be the leading cause of death for young people, age 15-20."

There is no cost for the class, as the program is supported by a grant awarded by the California Office of Traffic Safety Administration through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Parents are required to attend alongside their teens.
