Sound Off On Plans To Change Berkeley's Granny Flat Regulations

The plans could dramatically change the character of Berkeley neighborhoods.

BERKELEY, CA — Could more granny flats put a dent in the Berkeley housing shortage? The city is considering changing the rules and wants to hear from you before making any decisions.

The Berkeley City Council will decide whether to modify and further streamline the permitting process for accessory dwelling units, which are often referred to as ADUs, granny flats or in-law cottages.

Things under consideration include expanding the zoning districts where ADUs are allowed, increasing height and square footage limits and more.

The city is taking input online, and dozens of people are already weighed in. Comments include,

  • "...explicitly and permanently guarantee no rent control."
  • "Permit owners to live off-site and not in either the Main home nor in the ADU. Also, relax parking restrictions if there is public transit of any kind within 1/2 mile of the location."
  • "...do require fire sprinklers."

The Berkeley City Council will take up the issue at its May 15 meeting.
