Charlton Heston Family Puts 'Ben-Hur' Mansion in Beverly Hills Up For Sale

The late actor lived in the home from 1959-2008. The Mid-Century Modern estate designed by William S. Beckett remains virtually unchanged.

The family of late actor Charlton Heston has listed his family home of some 45+ years on the market for $12.3 million, according to realtor.com. It is the first time the property has been put up for sale.

The Beverly Hills residence, whose mid-century modern design remains virtually intact, offers four bedrooms, staff quarters, six bathrooms, and a stunning two-story library located off the master suite, reports the Daily Mail.

The legendary actor, who was seen in more than 100 films and won an Academy Award for Best Actor for 1959’s “Ben-Hur,” lived on the gated three-acre property located above Coldwater Canyon until his death in 2008.

He commissioned architect William S. Beckett to build the home while he was filming “Ben-Hur” in the late 1950s, according to stuff.co.nz, with son Fraser Heston saying his dad “always said it was the house that ‘Ben-Hur’ built.”

Charlton’s wife Lydia recently moved out of the home, prompting the family’s decision to part with the nearly 10,000-square-foot home, though Fraser called it “a difficult decision.”

The residence, positioned at the end of a long driveway flanked by Cyprus trees, features “views of the surrounding mountains from nearly every room, with several wooden decks poking into the nearby trees,” reports realtor.com. The property includes a tennis court and an angular pool to complement the sharp angles of the home’s design.

Now 60, Fraser, a filmmaker, played the infant Moses in “The Ten Commandments” when he was a baby; his dad played the adult Moses.

Listing agent Myra Nourmand says purchasing the property is a “once in a lifetime chance to own this piece of Hollywood history.”
