'Nomadland' Snags Top Golden Globe, While Streaming Wins Big

Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime dominated a virtual ceremony defined by technical troubles and snipes at the Hollywood Foreign Press.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Beverly Hills hosted part of the 78th Golden Globe Awards, with Amy Poehler broadcasting from the Beverly Hilton in the first-ever fully virtual, bicoastal awards ceremony. The night saw tech glitches, a diverse roster of wins with some pointed questions over diversity in the Hollywood Foreign Press, and a victorious night for streaming platforms.

The ceremony was supposed to take place in January, but was bumped up to Feb. 28 back in June, after the Academy Awards were postponed until April. Tina Fey hosted from the Rainbow Room in New York, while her long-time presenting partner Amy Poehler broadcasted from Beverly Hills, alongside a handful of socially-distanced, masked first responders. Nominees watched from home, and technical difficulties sometimes marred acceptance speeches. Daniel Kaluuya, who won best actor in a supporting role in any motion picture for his work in “Judas and the Black Messiah”, could not be heard when he first tried to accept his award.

In another sign of the pandemic times, streaming services won the night. Netflix won ten victories overall, Hulu and Amazon each won three, and Disney Plus won two. See below for a full list of winners and nominees.

Hulu took the top prize with “Nomadland”, the understated story of a woman who travels the American West in a van looking for work, which won Best Drama. Director Chloe Zhao became the second woman to win that category, after Barbra Streisand.

“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”, the sequel to the popular 2006 film that premiered on Amazon, won outstanding musical or comedy, and creator Sacha Baron Cohen won best actor in that category.

Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer in August, won Best Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Netflix’s “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Boseman’s widow Taylor Simone Ledward, tearfully accepted his award after a moving tribute to his life and career.

Netflix won big with “The Crown”, which won Best Television Series Drama, and awards of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series for Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles); Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series for Emma Corrin (Princess Diana); and Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television for Gillian Anderson (Margaret Thatcher.) Olivia Colman, who played Queen Elizabeth II, was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, but lost to castmate Emma Corrin.

Netflix also scored big with its popular chess series “The Queen’s Gambit,” which won for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made For Television. Anna Taylor-Joy also won Best Actress in that category; and “Schitt’s Creek,” the Canadian series airing on Netflix that won Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy, and scored a Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy for Catherine O’Hara.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the organization of journalists that awards the Golden Globes, did not emerge as a winner of the night, and many called it out for its lack of diversity. Despite a night of wins for Black performers - Andra Day won for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Daniel Kaluuya won for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture, and John Boyega for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television, among others - actors and presenters took note that the HFPA does not have a single Black member.

Fey and Poehler opened the show by asking the HFPA to diversify its ranks, calling it “90 international, no-Black journalists” and “European weirdos.” Sacha Baron Cohen thanked the “all-white” HFPA, while “This is Us” star Sterling K. Brown said that, “It is great to be Black - back - at the Golden Globes.”

Show organizers said they would address concerns about HFPA membership during the broadcast, according to CNN, but there were only vague promises. “We look forward to a more inclusive future,” Turkish journalist Ali Sar said.

The ceremony can be watched on the Roku Channel, Hulu with Live TV, YouTube TV, AT&T TV, Sling TV, Fubo TV, and NBC Peacock.
