Prince's Death: Justin Timberlake, Ellen DeGeneres, Samuel L. Jackson Among Celebrities Who Express Shock, Sadness

The music icon's sudden passing prompted stunned tributes from the world of entertainment.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA -- "Numb. Stunned. This can't be real.” "I'm Crushed!!" “And just like that ... the world lost a lot of magic.”

Those are just some of the words shared Wednesday on social media by the celebrity world, which was hit hard by the news of the sudden passing of music legend Prince. Many well-known Hollywood A-listers took to Twitter to mourn and express their disbelief of his passing.

Prince Rogers Nelson died at his Paisley Park studios and estate in Minnesota. He was 57.

"Numb. Stunned. This can't be real," singer Justin Timberlake tweeted.

"Just heard about Prince ... can't believe it," Country star Keith Urban tweeted.

"I'm Crushed!!" Samuel L. Jackson tweeted.

"Damn. Moms just went to prince concert in ATL like 3 days ago," Bow Wow tweeted...

Prince had performed at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta last week — it was one of his last performances. He was in Oakland, California performing some of his last shows earlier this year at the Paramount Theatre and at the Oracle Arena. A fan of the Bay Area and the Golden State Warriors basketball team, he sat courtside on March 3. Just prior to that, Prince gave fans a treat by hosting an unscheduled performance at the 1015 Folsom Nightclub in San Francisco on Feb. 28.

Known for usually renting elaborate homes, he once owned a residence in Beverly Hills, California; a sprawling mansion that recently sold for $5.5 million, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The cause of Prince's death has yet to be revealed but he had been sick with flu, which caused him to cancel several performances.

"Prince! Knew he wasn't well. Didn't realise he was that sick. Sad day," The Walking Dead actor Tom Payne tweeted.

Some lamented the loss of a musical genius. Prince created a style all his own. He won an Oscar for best original song, "Purple Rain," in 1985. The artist also won seven Grammys.

"The word genius gets tossed around a lot today. It's a shame because it should be saved for true geniuses. And one of those was Prince," CBS veteran newsman Dan Rather wrote on his Facebook page.

Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas said Prince was the "the greatest musician I have ever seen in my life. His show was like church and school rolled into one."

Others just expressed sadness at Prince's passing.

"May your beautiful soul be amongst the angels," model Karrueche Tran tweeted. "You will forever be remembered!"

"Prince was brilliant and larger than life," Ellen DeGeneres tweeted. "What a sad day."

"And just like that ... the world lost a lot of magic," Katy Perry tweeted. "Rest in peace Prince! Thanks for giving us so much."
