Q & A With Author Amy Powers on The Power of Being Your Own Boss
Amy Powers' new book shares secrets of how the author was able to enjoy her life and family while pursuing a passion and making extra money.

Amy Powers is a Harvard-trained Lawyer, Columbia University MBA, and Emmy-nominated songwriter turned Empowerment Coach, Speaker and Author. After discovering that working as an attorney at a major New York firm fed her bank account but starved her soul, she ditched the “grind to 5” and began writing lyrics, finding multi-platinum success with artists from Barbie to Barbra Streisand. However, freelance life brought its own challenges. She yearned to increase her revenue, decrease her stress and have more flexibility for family. That’s when she discovered Network Marketing, through a company that aligned with her core values of healthy living inside and out.
Initially skeptical, she soon saw the power of this business model, and seized the opportunity to create more money, more impact, and more freedom to live life on her own terms. After following her company’s blueprint to reach the top 1% level of its compensation plan, Amy felt called to reach a wider audience, and assist others looking for solutions. Amy believes in manifesting one’s own destiny by leveraging the power of authenticity and passion. She aims to inspire others to join her in living their healthiest, happiest, most abundant lives.
NO DEGREE REQUIRED: Network Marketing The Ivy League Way is her first book, which is now the #1 one best seller on Amazon in the network marketing category. I sat down with Amy Powers to find out what powers her.
What prompted you to write this book?
It was a calling. I literally woke up one day with the title in my head. I knew there were people who needed to read this. Look, it took me 3 careers to figure out what worked in my life! I started out as a Wall Street lawyer, where I loved the money, but I literally hated the work. So I became a songwriter, where I loved the work but hated the worry… and because it was freelance, I was worried a LOT. Having a Network Marketing business was a total game-changer for me. So I am on a mission to help anyone who’s open to it live life more on their terms, and use Network Marketing as a vehicle to do that.
I have directly experienced what it’s like NOT to be 100% content with what you’re doing, and how life is going. Now that I have more ease, more balance, more community and more passion in my life, I really feel called to let other people know there’s another option.
With my new approach, I was able to keep writing songs, and be a present parent -- while also growing a significant business.

Right now, so many people are looking for a flexible way to create an additional stream of revenue. And they don’t want to have to go back to school, or go into debt - to create it. Network Marketing is a smart option they might not have considered … or that they might be skeptical about. I was the ultimate skeptic, so I wrote the book for people like me. To tell them what Network Marketing actually is in today's economy, and to show them - hey, if you want to do this - here’s how to do it right.
Why does a business like this make more sense to so many people now?

Because right now - in light of the last year - a lot of people are reevaluating their lives. Some are seeing that jobs are not perhaps as safe as they thought. Some are tired of unsatisfying work. Or they need more freedom in their schedule - to take care of kids, or aging parents, or themselves! Or they want to be their own boss - but they don’t want all the hassles of actually starting a solo business. Or they’re just looking to repay those student loans. Or help with expenses. Or they can’t quite afford to retire. Or they CAN afford to retire but they’re looking for something meaningful to do. -And people are waking up to their power as consumers and authentic recommenders. That is the heart of this business model. Plus, you don’t have to stop doing what you’re doing now, you just work this in.
What are 3 common misperceptions and hesitations people have about starting a Network Marketing business?
Well, one I hear all the time is that it’s a 'get rich quick scheme.' It’s not. It’s a business, like any business. It’s effort-based. It takes hard work, and consistency! In my company, for example, there’s a 5 year plan to the top. And no one promises you’ll get to the top!
Another misperception is that you have to spend a lot to start a network marketing business. Not true. This is no longer a business model where people need to buy and hold inventory, or invest lots of money. The average price to start a Network Marketing business in the US is under $100. And you might spend a few hundred dollars to get some products for yourself.
Also, I hear that it’s some kind of scam or ‘pyramid scheme’. It’s not! It’s a totally legal business model! Retail is a business model (quintessentially 20th century). Network Marketing is a business model. An up and coming, very 21st century business model - harnessing the power of online technology with our very human desire to connect and serve.
Besides reading your book, what advice would you give to someone intrigued by the idea of NWM?
Well -- First, I'd advise them to congratulate themselves for being open minded! Next, I'd recommend that they take my quiz.It has questions that will tell you whether you're a good fit for this kind of business. Go to www.readyforchangequiz.com. It takes two minutes.
