Not only was he once voted the Best of the Bay Singer Songwriter by the San Francisco Bay Guardian, but legendary music journalist Ben Fong-Torres, former Senior Editor of Rolling Stone said, “People keep comparing him to other artists, but I think he just sounds like Curt Yagi, and that is plenty good enough. This is one excellent singer and songwriter.”

On Thursday, Oct. 17, Curt Yagi & The People Standing Behind Me will be performing as part of Dancin’ Off the Avenue at the Burlingame Farmers Market (Park Road at Burlingame Avenue in Burlingame) at 5 p.m.

One would assume that with so much critical acclaim for his most recent album, “Close My Eyes,” Yagi must be a life-long performer craving the spotlight. Think again. The truth is that he grew up as a painfully-shy child who always liked to do things when people were looking the other way. Even in his early adulthood, Yagi was a quiet person who couldn’t stand the thought of being the center of attention.

By chance, he began volunteering his time working with at-risk children in San Francisco. His continued involvement forced him to lead large groups of children and adults through various activities and of course public speaking was a big part of it. Eventually, Yagi broke out of his shell and gained enough confidence to start writing and performing music.

Today, this once-shy individual is tearing up the Bay Area music scene performing at great venues including The Fillmore and Yoshi’s. On his latest album, Yagi delivers captivating lyrics and hummable and memorable melodies, augmented by a buoyant three-piece horn section and edgy and layered guitars built on the foundation of a rock solid, driving rhythm section.

GoldSea.com reported that, "hearing one of Curt Yagi’s original songs from his "Close My Eyes" album for the first time is like going for a walk in the woods and finding a unicorn. You keep listening to make sure it’s really what it seems to be — a real find."

His songs are delivered in an inimitable and endearingly charismatic persona the San Francisco Bay Guardian describes as “the swagger of Lenny Kravitz and the lyrical prowess of Jack Johnson,” and The San Francisco Chronicle called Yagi “a talented songwriter who sings like Kenny Loggins.”
