Bikers Cruise Into Burlingame This Weekend

Expect road closures as the Burlingame Criterium and Ryan's Ride pedal into town.

This weekend, cyclists of all ages will descend upon Burlingame for a morning full of biking events. The Burlingame Criterium and Ryan’s Ride both take place Sunday, bringing fitness and fundraising to town.

For the past 26 years, the Peninsula Velo Cycling Club has been producing the Burlingame Criterium, a race for seasoned cyclists around downtown. Nine years ago, Ryan’s Ride came onto the scene.

The ride features more than 700 children ages 18 months to 12 years old cycling in memory of Ryan Phua, who died of Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood at the age of 2-and-a-half. His parents, John and Michele Phua, created the event to honor his memory.

Funds from the ride go towards the LIVESTRONG Foundation and other cancer programs, as well as the Burlingame Community for Education Foundation. Ryan and his twin brother were born shortly after John Phua’s recovery from cancer.

The kids pedal once the amateur and professional cyclists finish their series of races.

“I look forward to meeting the participants and the excitement of the day, along with the laughter and smiles on the faces of the children,” said Burlingame Mayor Jerry Deal in a statement. "It serves as an inspiration to us all."
