Burlingame Teen Shares Love of Soccer

While many teens spend the summer exploring hobbies and passions, some take the time to share those pastimes with others.

Nia Morgan, a rising junior at Burlingame High School, is taking her love for soccer overseas this summer as a volunteer with Soccer Without Borders.

The volunteer program works with kids in under-served areas in both the USA and abroad, helping them gain self-confidence and life skills through soccer.

“We’re volunteering to coach young girls in Nicaragua,” Morgan said.

Morgan, who has been playing soccer for about 10 years, and 14 other volunteers from across the country will spend a week in Nicaragua coaching a group of girls. The volunteers leaves July 28.

As part of the trip, each volunteer must raise $500, so Morgan decided to host a soccer clinic.

“It’s for young girls ages 8 to 14; we’re just teaching them soccer,” Morgan said. “Each family donates $20.”

The clinic will be led by coaches and players from the San Mateo Soccer Club, and takes place from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Burlingame High School soccer stadium Saturday.

Morgan said she previously coached a youth soccer team and knows she enjoys working with young girls, so she is looking forward to the camp and clinic. She is also excited about the cultural part of the program—each volunteer lives with a local family for the week.

“I speak fluent Spanish because my mom grew up in Bolivia,” she said. “I think it will be a really good experience.”
