Construction Welcomes Students to New School Year

McKinley Elementary School is still under construction as the school year begins.

As students return to class throughout the Tuesday, some students may notice a bit of an aesthetic difference.

Kids returning to will be welcome by the sight of a not-quite-complete exterior.

According to school documents, facilities work over the summer was focused primarily on the exterior of McKinley and the first phase of classroom modernization. Once the outside stucco was removed from McKinley, extensive dry rot of the building was found. It was replaced, and the building was covered in a paper of sorts, after which stucco was reapplied.

Applying the brick and pediment features in the last step, and district officials expect its completion by mid October.

Moving into the 2012-2013 school year, improvements will continue throughout the district. Classroom modernization projects at Franklin Elementary School, Lincoln Elementary School and Burlingame Elementary School have been approved by the Department of the State Architect and are waiting for funding. Hoover’s design will go before the DSA in Fall 2012.

A Facilities Bond Measure is planned for the November 2012 ballot for modernization at the three schools and Hoover renovation.
