Flight Cancellations, Delays Adding Up as Storm Sweeps Through Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, CA – The wet, windy weather hitting the Bay Area today has already resulted in significant flight delays and cancellations at San Francisco International Airport, according to SFO officials.

So far today, the airport has announced 85 cancellations, which are fairly evenly split between arrivals and departures and are mostly for short-haul flights along the West Coast, according to SFO spokesman Doug Yakel.

Delays are averaging between 60 and 90 minutes and could increase as the storm strengthens throughout the day.

Passengers are being urged to check with their airline for the most recent flight status updates, Yakel said.

Flooding has been reported on various roadways in the North Bay.

National Weather Service officials have forecast up to 4 inches of rain in the North Bay and along coastal mountain ranges today, with up to 1.5 inches elsewhere in the Bay Area. Wind gusts of up to 50 mph may be reported.

Rainfall is expected to be particularly hazardous in areas of Santa Clara and Monterey counties where the Loma and Soberanes fires burned earlier this year. The weather service said heavy rain could result in an increased threat of flash floods, debris flows and mudslides.
