Yabba-dabba-doo! 'Flintstone House' Goes on the Market

At $4.2 million, this modern Stone Age house could be yours.

If you have ever wanted to live like the modern Stone Age family, here’s your chance. The iconic and distinctive house perched on the hill overlooking Interstate 280 is for sale.

This recognizable piece of bedrock is known as locally as the “Flintstone House” because of its resemblance to house on the classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon series. The house, a favorite of locals, children and adults alike, is on the market for $4.2 million.

The owners have chosen to remain anonymous, but realtor Judy Meuschke said they have lived in the home for 19 years.

While $4.2 million price tag for the 39-year-old, three-bedroom, two-bathroom home might seem steep, it is “pretty good price for a landmark,” Meuschke told NBC Bay Area.

The house was built in 1976 by architect William Nicholson. He was experimenting with new building techniques. The house constructed using concrete sprayed onto wire mesh frames and giant inflated balloons the bubble look, according to SFGate.com

It was known as the “Barbapapa House” in the 1970s, according to Curb San Francisco.

The house went into disrepair in the 1980s and underwent remodeling in 2007. Architect Eugene Tssui was tasked with remodeling the kitchen and said the owner wanted to create “a work of art inside a work of art,” Tssui told CBS San Francisco.

The interior looked like it was pulled from the pages of Dr. Seuss’ books, but Tssui said whimsical was what the owners were after.

He said the home should not be sold to anyone, but to someone who will appreciate it.

“(It’s for) that person who is not afraid to stand out from conformity,” he said. “From the usual, everyday mentality of living.”

The house is shown by appointment only.
