Kitten Rescued From Highway 101 During Rush Hour Traffic

SAN MATEO, CA — Thanks to a quick reacting Good Samaritan, a black and white homeless kitten was rescued Monday after attempting to cross southbound Highway 101 near the Ralston Avenue exit during the rush hour morning traffic.

“What started as a normal morning commute to work turned into an astonishing rescue of a kitten,” said Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA’s (PHS/SPCA) Communications Manager Buffy Martin Tarbox. “A driver noticed a kitten running alongside the concrete divider on southbound Highway 101 near the Ralston Avenue exit, and then attempt to dart across the busy highway. The driver stopped and with the assistance of two other drivers, who also stopped to assist, blocked traffic and rescued the kitten.”

The frightened kitten took refuge in the truck wheel of the man’s Ford F350. The man then safely captured the kitten and brought him to PHS/SPCA. PHS/SPCA staff christened the kitten Leo in honor of the man who saved him.

“We estimate the kitten is about seven weeks old. He has no identification, and thankfully has no visible injuries from his harrowing ordeal,” according to Tarbox.
