Meet Your DNC Delegate: Sandy Narayan Franchi

As the Republican National Convention and Democratic National Convention kick off, get to know your local delegates.

Meet Sandy Narayan Franchi, Hillsborough’s local delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Although she serves as the chief litigator and managing owner of The Narayan Law Firm in her professional life, she is also a passionate Democrat.

She’ll head to Charlotte, North Carolina for the DNC September 4-6.

We attempted to contact our local delegates to both conventions. We found one Republican delegate in Burlingame, but, as a Ron Paul delegate, she will not be attending the Republican National Convention.

How did you become a delegate?

I had to run for an election and people within the Democratic Party had to vote. Everyone who is a registered Democrat [could] vote, and I actually received the most votes.

Why did you want to become a delegate?

I am a very big supporter of this President and I’ve tried to be very active in my community, and this is something I’ve never done before or even imagined doing…I never really thought it could happen. One doesn’t even know how to go about doing this. I was essentially asked, ‘are you interested?’

What are you doing to prepare for the convention?

This is my first time going so I’m very new to it. All I know is I’m going to do my best to represent my district and to support the President.

What do you hope to take away from the convention?

I have always had the utmost respect for the democratic process because I know a lot of countries, there really isn’t [a democratic process]. I was born in the Fiji Islands, which had a democratic government and then has had a military dictatorship…I am very aware how precious it is to have a democratically elected government, and just the fact that a regular normal person can get elected and go and participate and be there… I’m looking forward to it as an amazing experience and trying to bring to the table my background as a immigrant, someone from Northern California…I’m hoping that I’ll bring something to the table when I go to the convention [and] just reaffirm everything that I love about this country.

What important issues do you want to address with other delegates at the convention?

I didn’t per say run on any type of platform that dealt with any particular issue. The other four of the five woman that are going…[are] very involved in education and the lack of funding for education, so that’s something that I know that our delegation, in terms of overall majority of the people, that is their main cause. I’ll be supporting them on that…Otherwise, I’m very generally supporting the Democratic platform.

How important is it to represent your hometown at the convention?

It’s really important. I am the only delegate from Hillsborough. I’ve been a life-long Democrat. I’ve supported this President in the first election and I’m proud to support him in the second election. This is the district that belongs to Jackie Speier, and I have the utmost admiration for her and have supported her from day one…I can’t think of anything better for me.

What are you most looking forward to?

I am so honored that I was voted for. I’m excited and just the whole gamut of emotions…I’m very excited to hear where the vision of the country is in the next four years. I really hope we’re going to continue on the right path and pull ourselves out of this recession and…I’m hopeful the policies in place will continue.
