Police Warn of Man Posing as PG&E Worker

Don't allow utility workers into your home unless you can confirm they are supposed to be there or they provide proper identification.

On Tuesday around 11:30 in the morning, a Burlingame resident reported to police a suspicious man, potentially pretending to be a PG&E employee. The man, described as white or Hispanic and about 5-feet-7-inches, wore a traffic vest and PG&E badge.

According to the Burlingame Police Department, he rang the doorbell on the resident’s home in the Poppy Drive and Hale Drive area and said he was there to check the gas meter, which he did.

He then entered a teal car with no PG&E markings and spent a minute looking at a phone with another passenger before driving off towards Adeline Drive.

Police officials said it is not uncommon for thieves to pose as utility workers to gain access to homes. They ask residence to help them check the problem or perform a task while an accomplice or other person posing as a utility worker, too, steals jewelry or cash.

Burlingame police suggest never allowing strangers into your home and always asking utility workers for identification, or call PG&E to confirm the worker should be there.
