UK Hair Celebrates 25 Years

The salon is celebrating with special deals, champagne and prizes.

UK Hair Salon on Burlingame Avenue celebrates 25 years of business in town this weekend with champagne, deals on salon products and raffle prizes to thank the Burlingame business community and the loyal customers during a Saturday open house.

“We just wanted a chance to say ‘Cheers to 25 Years,’” said owner and operator Jeff Silverman in a statement.

Silverman opened UK Hair in the back of a shoe store on Burlingame Avenue in 1987 after moving from his hometown of Nottingham in the United Kingdom, where he began sweeping the floors at his brother’s salon when he was 13.

“I thought it would be a good way to work, to socialize and to be able to travel,” Silverman said.

He ended up apprenticing at several salons and traveled to California after hearing a radio program on the Golden Gate Bridge.

He returned to the U.K. and opened a salon in 1983, however California soon called him back. He returned, working out of a garage in Foster City before moving to the shoe store on Burlingame Avenue a few years later.

“Having a salon on a street like Burlingame Avenue was something I’d always dreamed of,” Silverman said.

In 1993, UK Hair moved to the front of the building, keeping up on the latest hair fashions from Mohawks to thermal hair straightening.

“Even as we kept up with all the latest fashions, we’ve always been able to cater to all walks of life,” said Silverman. “This weekend we want to have a bit of a bash, to say thank you to our loyal clients, friends and fellow merchants for their continued patronage and support for 25 years.”
