Mary Sue Maurer -- From City Hall to the CCC

Madam Mayor has another title now -- district director for the California Conservation Corps. Calabasas Mayor Mary Sue Maurer is the new head of the CCC's Camarillo Center.

"I've always admired the work and mission of the CCC and how it changes lives," Maurer said. "It seems like a great opportunity to use my background in mentoring young adults, resource conservation and being actively involved in public service."

Maurer will continue her civic duties as mayor, but as of Feb. 1, she began a new day job -- working with the 72 young men and women of the CCC’s Camarillo Center. The center, established in 1977, is the only CCC site in Southern California where corpsmembers live on-campus.

Part of her duties will be overseeing a special partnership the center has with Cal Fire where corpsmembers receive training and real-time experience in fighting wildfires. Many go on to firefighting careers.

Camarillo corpsmembers also take on a wide range of natural resource projects in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties, like the boardwalk at Carpinteria State Beach. The Camarillo Center corpsmembers recently built the first section of the boardwalk and are about to begin work on phase two.

The CCC provides paid opportunities for young adults between 18 and 25 years old to spend a year working outdoors to improve California and its communities. The Corps is also one of the state's premier disaster response agencies, fighting fires, floods, oil spills and more. There are openings for new corpsmembers each month.

In addition to Maurer’s service as the mayor of Calabasas, she has worked for the state Department of Toxic Substances Control and taught government and economics at a college prep school for students with learning differences. Maurer has also served as a field deputy to former Assemblymember Fran Pavley and deputy press secretary to former Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi.

Maurer was first elected to the Calabasas City Council in 2005 and is now in her third term as mayor.

An avid hiker, Maurer enjoys spending her spare time in the Santa Monica and San Gabriel mountains. A few years back, she climbed Mt. Whitney.

Maurer is the mother of three young men, ages 20, 22, and 25 -- who just happen to fall in the CCC corpsmember age range.
