This week brought some very good news regarding the re-opening of Calabasas’ municipal properties. While most of our parks and recreational facilities were operational at least in part during the COVID pandemic, many had to be closed. On April 13th, after more than one year of closure, the Calabasas Municipal Library will open its doors to the public once again. By May 3rd, all City employees will be returning to work on-site, and shortly thereafter we will re-open City Hall to the general public.
We have not yet established a date to re-open the Calabasas Senior Center. The Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center remains closed for now, as we continue to work with the City of Agoura Hills to make necessary repairs to the building and establish a viable, long-term financial plan to sustain the enterprise. One note of caution: Any relapses could cause the State and/or Los Angeles County to re-impose some of the more severe restrictions that have kept our facilities closed. This is, of course, beyond our control, and could preempt any of the timelines previously outlined.
As of today, we are extending eligibility for the April 16th COVID vaccination clinic at the Agoura Hills/Calabasas Community Center to anyone 16 and older. There are limited doses available, so people are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible. Pre-registration is required. Further information, including a link to register, can be found here: https://bit.ly/3dV4sMG . The clinic is sponsored by the four cities of Calabasas, Agoura Hills, Hidden Hills, and Westlake Village.
Shortly after Los Angeles County crossed into California’s “Orange Tier” at the beginning of the week, the Governor announced the entire State may be ready to re-open on June 15th. It is a whiplash-inducing but welcome turn of events from where we were just three months ago. Last weekend the City held its first in-person activity since the onset of the pandemic. Our Hop & Go Bunny Trail at Juan de Anza Park was sold out and much appreciated. Against the backdrop of ever-changing guidelines, we will continue to update the community regarding the status of future community events, starting with a discussion at our upcoming April 14th City Council meeting.
So far, we have had a healthy response to our inaugural Historical Treasure Contest. April 5th marked the 30th Anniversary of Calabasas cityhood, and to kick off a year-long celebration we debuted a monthly competition seeking tangible pieces of local history that may otherwise be lost to time.
