Residential Burglaries On The Rise In Calabasas: Crime Report

Over a third of traffic stops in Calabasas in February resulted from one violation.

CALABASAS, CA — Residential burglaries in Calabasas doubled between Jan. 1 and March 9 of 2021, compared to the same timeframe the year prior, data from the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Office shows.

So far in 2021, six residential burglaries have occurred, up three from the year prior. Burglaries of garages and out-buildings also grew by two, up from zero compared to the year prior.

Burglaries of businesses, however, dropped by two when comparing the first several days of the prior year.

In the same timeframe, the theft of vehicles, petty theft and grand theft — which includes the stealing of items over $950 in value — all dropped year-over-year.

In a recent Calabasas City Council meeting, the sheriff’s office highlighted three recent crimes of note, including one burglary incident.

According to a sheriff’s report, three people who live in Encino and Simi Valley were arrested on burglary charges in the 4700 block of Commons Way in Calabasas. The three suspects were found to have stolen some $4,000 worth of alcoholic beverages. One suspect was also found to have narcotic drugs, along with a passport, driver’s license and credit cards that did not belong to him.

The sheriff’s office also highlighted the arrest of a suspect who admitted to trying to steal catalytic converters in the area of Calabasas Road and Valley Circle Boulevard.

One person riding in a car that was pulled over for a traffic violation was on felony probation for assault and had an outstanding arrest warrant for vehicle theft and battery, authorities said. A sawzall, crow bar, bolt cutters, torch lighters and drugs were found in the car.

From Jan. 1 to March 9 of 2020, zero armed robberies occurred in Calabasas, but two strong-arm robberies were reported. In the same timeframe in 2021, one armed robbery and three strong-arm robberies took place.

Two Los Angeles residents were arrested for robbery in the 26500 block of Agoura Road after they tried to steal items from a store, the sheriff’s office said. When an employee tried to stop the thief from taking the stolen items, they assaulted the worker.

The most common traffic violation in Calabasas in February 2021 was drivers who failed to stop at a stop sign. Data shows 51 people were cited for this violation last month.

The second-most common violation was for a person driving without a license, which resulted in 19 citations last month. Driving without registration, with 18 citations, followed.

All told, 148 citations were issued in Calabasas in February.
