Hammer Theatre presents "King Lear" starring Ian McKellen

Hammer Theatre Center presents the National Theatre Live screening of the five-star Chichester Festival Theatre production King Lear starring Ian McKellen in the title role. This contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, and shocking play follows two fathers as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends. One a King and the other his courtier, both men reject the children who truly love them, and their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery. Starring Ian McKellen (The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, X-Men), the performance was filmed during its limited run in the West End. Critics applauded King Lear unanimously, with reviewers calling it “Extraordinarily moving” (The Independent), “Nuanced and powerful” (The Times), and “A triumph” (Evening Standard).

Audiences will be viewing a high-definition screening of the acclaimed London stage production captured live at London’s National Theatre.
