Housing With Units For Homeless Breaks Ground In Santa Clara Co.

A new 145-unit housing complex, with more than half reserved for people currently homeless, is set to break ground in Santa Clara.

SANTA CLARA, CA — Ground will be broken in Santa Clara on Monday morning on an apartment development of 145 studio units, more than half of them designated for people now homeless.

Construction of Calabazas Community Apartments started earlier this month at the 1-acre site near Caltrain's Lawrence Station, Calabazas Creek and the Lawrence Expressway.

About 80 of the project's 145 ADA accessible units "will be set aside for individuals experiencing homelessness," according to an announcement from Abode Services, a nonprofit partner in the project.

"Abode Services has made great strides in its mission to end homelessness through the Calabazas Community Apartments site," Santa Clara Mayor Lisa Gillmor said in a statement. "This housing development will help re-house the formerly homeless and bring much-needed affordable housing to Santa Clara."

Other partners in the development of what is described as a "permanent supportive housing site" include the City and County of Santa Clara, Destination: Home, Cisco, Capital One, Enterprise, Housing Trust Silicon Valley, and the Santa Clara County Housing Authority.

Almost $29 million of the project's finding comes from an affordable housing bond approved by county voters in 2016. The John Stewart Company will provide property management of the development, which is expected to open next fall.

The development will have around-the-clock security, laundry, a community room and computer lab. It will also be "a pet-friendly environment."

Abode Services (www.abodeservices.org) will provide job assistance, financial literacy, computer training, case management and health education, among other offerings.

"We believe everyone should have a home and our mission is to end homelessness," said Louis Chicoine, Abode Services' chief executive officer. "And we are proud of the progress we're making at Calabazas Community Apartments, as the development moves us closer to fulfilling our mission by providing housing and services to the most vulnerable in our communities."

The public is invited to a groundbreaking ceremony from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at 2904 Corvin Dr. in Santa Clara.
