LGBTQ Participants In Sports Headline San Jose State Talk

The town hall is scheduled for Wednesday morning at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara where SF 49ers' Al Guido is due to unveil team "pride."

SAN JOSE, CA — San Jose State’s Institute for the Study of Sport, Society and Social Change is partnering with the San Francisco 49ers to present the next Words to Action Town Hall on LGBTQ + Activism in the world of sports.

Joining San Francisco 49ers President Al Guido in unveiling a demonstration of team "Pride," a slew of panelists will discuss equity and inclusion in sports. The town hall slated for Wednesday from 9 a.m. to noon. at Levi's Stadium located in the 501 Club at 4900 Marie P. DeBartolo Way in Santa Clara.

The following speakers will address the delicate issues associated with LGBTQ participants in sports:

  • Patricio “Pat” Manuel, the first transgender professional boxer in the U.S. will lead a discussion titled "LGBTQ Activism in Sport - Past, Present, Future," with moderator Anne Lieberman, director of policy and programs at Athlete Ally serving

Other panel contributors include:

  • Ezra Baeli-Wang, the captain of the NCAA Division 1 men’s fencing team, who led student-athlete opposition to North Carolina’s anti-LGBTQ law
  • Phaidra Knight, a professional rugby athlete who was named the top player in the world for her position in 2002 and 2006 and the U.S. Rugby Player of the Decade in 2010
  • Lori Lindsey, a professional soccer athlete who played on the U.S. Women’s National team at the 2011 Women’s World Cup and helped earn the 2012 Olympic gold medal
