In Memory of Douglas Paul Smith

Smith, a Los Gatos native, died on July 31. Leave your condolences, memories for his family in the comment section.

Former Los Gatos resident, Douglas Paul Smith passed away July 31st after a valiant two year fight with brain and lung cancer. For those of you living in LG during the 70’s you had to have known Doug. He was a mainstay at Mt. Charley’s; working his way up from dishwasher to bus boy to waiter to eventually managing with founding owner Jim Farwell.

Doug also cleaned buildings for several Los Gatos landlords. He would do that in the early morning and then handle his shift at Charley’s. You could not find a harder worker.

Doug left Los Gatos and spent time living near Clear Lake then moving to Philadelphia, New York, Thailand and back to New York.

Doug spent his last fifteen years in Vermont where he was one of the nation’s top Subaru salesmen. Doug was a real character, somewhat eccentric; he loved to shock people with his crazy antics and life chapter stories. Who will forget the time he danced with Bertha, his named vacuum cleaner, at a holiday party at Mt. Charley’s.

Doug is survived by his sister Martha, and brother Justin. May you rest in peace, Doug. You will be fondly remembered by many Los Gatos and area folks.
