Plastic is not biodegradable, and instead breaks down into tiny pieces that marine life mistake for food. Every year 7 trillion of these tiny plastic pieces, known as microplastics, flow into the San Francisco Bay from stormwater. That’s about 1 million pieces for every man, woman and child in the Bay Area! The largest source of these microplastics comes from storm drains. The drains collect plastic litter on the roads such as foam food packaging, and rubber bits from car tires, and deliver it, unfiltered, to local creeks and the San Francisco Bay.
