“My passion for teaching math has developed through the years, mainly from seeing the inequities that our education system creates for students of color and underrepresented communities. This is my way of not only doing more but also being more, as I am one of those underrepresented students,” Garcia said in a statement.
“My background taught me compassion, empathy, and understanding of what my community goes through on a daily basis. By pursuing a career as a math teacher, it is my aspiration to create opportunities for students to see math as a vehicle for change and a pathway to college. I hope to do more in order for me and my community to be more than what society expects us to be.”
Garcia will attend the University of California, Merced in the fall of 2021.
