Pedestrian Seriously Hurt In Santa Cruz County Crash

The pedestrian was in a crosswalk near Soquel when he was hit by a car.

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, CA — A Santa Cruz man suffered critical injuries in a collision Saturday evening in unincorporated Santa Cruz County near Soquel, California Highway Patrol officials said Monday.

The 27-year-old man was standing on the sidewalk on the northeast corner of Soquel Drive and North Rodeo Gulch Road at 5:40 p.m. when he began to walk south across Soquel Drive in the crosswalk.

A 2003 Honda Accord was traveling west on Soquel Drive and was unable to stop before hitting the pedestrian, CHP officials said. The pedestrian went up onto the hood of the car as the driver hit the brakes and went into the intersection.

The front, right side of the car hit a metal guardrail on the northwest corner of the intersection, throwing the pedestrian from the hood onto a grassy area nearby.

Paramedics took the pedestrian to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, according to CHP officials. The driver of the Honda was not injured.

CHP officials said that neither alcohol nor drugs played a part in the collision.
