Carlsbad High School Choirs Sweep Vocal Music Competition
CHS Win Top Honors in Three Divisions at Bonita Vista Competition
Choirs from throughout LA, Orange, and San Diego counties converged at the Ruth Chapman Performing Arts Center to participate in “San Diego Sings-2015.” This sold out vocal music competition hosted by Bonita Vista High School marked the first time Carlsbad High School had three choirs participating in the same event. It also marked the first time all three choirs took home top honors.
In the Concert Choir Division, judges scored each group on their musicianship including vocal tone, interpretation, diction, precision, dynamics, presentation and repertoire. Carlsbad High School’s Chamber Singers (advanced mixed choir) performed “Lacrimosa” by Mozart, “Go Lovely Rose” by Eric Whitacre, and “Esto Les Digo” by Kinley Lange. The Chamber Singers received a score of “Superior” – the highest rating possible - against Eastlake and San Ysidro High Schools.
In the Show Choir Divisions groups are judged on both musicianship and showmanship including creativity, execution, presentation and visual effect. Carlsbad High School’s Encore took first place in the women’s intermediate show choir division against strong competition from Diamond Bar, Eastlake, Esperanza, and Walnut High Schools. Encore’s “Little Red Riding Hood” set was an entertaining take on the classic story featuring Broadway songs and pop tunes. In the advanced mixed show choir division, Carlsbad’s Sound Express received first place honors against Diamond Bar and Chula Vista High Schools. Sound Express’s set, “A Life Well Lived,” tells the story of a teacher and the impact she has on the lives of her students. Choreographer, Damon Brown, created this original storyline and title song.

When asked to comment on the amazing accomplishments by these three choirs, Carlsbad High School choral director, Mr. Jessie Bullock, stated, “The weekend was a crazy thrill ride. The students gave their best performances and the hard work in rehearsals paid off. I am very proud of my students and so happy to have walked away with three choirs taking top scores in their divisions. Now we have to work even harder to beat our own scores to make sure we stay on top.”
Carlsbad High School’s Vocal Music Program is one of the few remaining programs in all of San Diego County. It strives to promote awareness, appreciation, and expression of the arts in the community. Visit www.chschoral.com for more information.
