Carlsbad High School's Chamber Singers to Perform at Riverside City College

Carlsbad High School's Chamber Singers, the elite mixed choir, will put their vocal dexterity to the test at the RCC Festival.

The Riverside City College High School Choral Festival is the first festival of the season in which chamber singers from high schools across Southern California will perform.

By definition, chamber singers are an elite group of vocalists who tend to sing a cappella or with minimal accompaniment, using their voices as instruments.

Under the guidance of Carlsbad High School’s Choral Director, Mr. Jessie Bullock, the CHS Chamber Singers will be performing “Lacrimosa” by Mozart, “Go Lovely Rose” by Eric Whitacre, and “Rytmus” by Ivan Hrušovský.

These Carlsbad choral powerhouses have been refining and working on the pieces since the summer and are looking forward to showcasing their vocals at this festival.

The Riverside City College High School Choral Festival is put on by John Byun, nationally recognized director of Choral and Vocal Activities at Riverside City College.

These festivals are opportunities for students to perform in venues that accentuate the vocals and also provide the students with valuable feedback.

This year’s choral performances will be adjudicated and critiqued by critically acclaimed choral director, John Russell.

Russell is the Director of Choral Activities at California State University, San Bernardino and was recently appointed as the Music Director of the San Diego Master Chorale.

At CSUSB he conducts the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir, teaches applied voice, choral methods, choral conducting, choral literature and conducts the opera.

All festival participants will receive recorded comments from Dr. Russell as well as a few minutes of direct work – like a master class in front of peers. The festival will be held at the Seventh Day Baptist Church at 5901 Chicago Avenue in Riverside on Oct. 22.

Performances will be at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. As this is an opportunity for choirs to perform for each other, seating will be limited.

The CHS Choral Boosters are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization (tax ID #30-0208051) established to support all choirs at Carlsbad High School. Over 130 students between the ages of 14 – 18 benefit from this program. The CHS Choral Boosters are completely funded by donations. Visit www.chschoral.com for more information.
