A 1st Place Win and 2 'Best Performer' Honors for Carlsbad High

The Burroughs Music Showcase in Burbank, CA is one of the most prestigious and well-attended show choir events of the season. On Saturday, April 11, Carlsbad High School’s women’s intermediate choir, Encore, took first place among the six schools competing in their division. Sophomore, Caledonia Thomas, was named “Best Performer” in Encore’s “Little Red Riding Hood” set, an entertaining take on the classic story featuring Broadway songs and pop tunes.

Carlsbad High School junior, Miranda Tomaneng, won “Best Performer” for her moving portrayal of the teacher in Sound Express’s set “A Life Well Lived.” Featuring original and contemporary songs, this set tells the story of a teacher and the impact she has on the lives of her students. Sound Express came in fourth in the advanced mixed tier two division.

In between the group competitions Burroughs held a solo competition. Carlsbad High School junior and Sound Express member, Elle Dodaro, won honorable mention and was among the top 10 performers in a field of 50 soloists from various high schools throughout the region.

The public is invited to hear all of Carlsbad High School’s award-winning choirs at The CHS POP SHOW, May 28, 29, and 30, at the Carlsbad Cultural Arts Center. This annual event features both show choir sets, outstanding performances by Chamber Singers and Lancer Choir, selected solo and group acts, and a silent auction. Carlsbad High School’s Vocal Music Program is one of the few remaining programs in all of San Diego County. This program strives to promote awareness, appreciation, and expression of the arts in the community. Choral director, Mr. Jessie Bullock, brings a wealth of experience and energy to the department. He mentors his students while encouraging teamwork and responsibility. Mr. Bullock directs all four choirs at Carlsbad High School: Chamber Singers (advanced mixed choir), Sound Express (advanced mixed show choir), Encore (intermediate women’s show choir), and Lancer Choir (beginning mixed choir).
