Golfer Makes Hole-in-One History, Gets New BMW
Sunday's Carlsbad High School Choral Boosters' 4th Annual Golf Tournament was a swinging success.
There was plenty of excitement at the Carlsbad High School Choral Boosters’ 4th Annual Golf Tournament this past Sunday, September 20th, at The Crossings at Carlsbad. Golfer Brandon DeLaCruz made a Hole-In-One on the 17th to win a two-year lease of a brand new 2016 BMW courtesy of BMW of Encinitas. Mr. DeLaCruz was also the winner of the putting contest and a member of the third place winning team.
Over 60 golfers came out in support of the Carlsbad High School Vocal Music Program. They endured the 90° heat with the help of ice cold craft beers and beverages courtesy of Sage Beverages and the Belching Beaver. The day began with a helicopter golf ball drop. Approximately three hundred individually numbered golf balls were dropped out of a helicopter over the 9th hole. The ball closest to the pin was #47, purchased for $20 by Shelley Thomas. Mrs. Thomas won $600 and generously donated it back to choral program (minus a round of drinks for the volunteers).
The tournament was a four-player scramble and first place went to the Sage Beverages foursome made up of players Jeff Brandt, Chris Steilen, Mike Glennie, & Ryan Pedder. They had a score of 51 (-21 under par) and won with an eagle on the 10th hole. In second place was the foursome of Joe Reftery, Brad Munro, Donovan Browning, & Hannah Durrette who also scored 51. In third place was Steve Shumaker, Marshall Thompson, Bill Baker, & Brandon DeLaCruz. All three of these teams will be invited to compete for a spot at the Randy Jones Invitational.

First place team member, Jeff Brandt, was on the winning team at the Randy Jones Invitational last year, which resulted in a $10,000 donation to the Carlsbad High School Vocal Music Program. The proceeds from Sunday’s tournament will help pay for costumes, choreographers, vocal clinics, competition fees, and so many other necessities that enable the 130 choral students to hone their skills and share outstanding vocal performances with the community.
The CHS Choral Boosters are a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization (tax ID #30-0208051) established to support the vocal music program at Carlsbad High School. Tax-deductible contributions will positively impact these hardworking students. Visit www.chschoral.com.
