Man Fatally Shot Near North County Park

OCEANSIDE, CA — Authorities Tuesday publicly identified a 25-year-old man killed in a late-night shooting in Oceanside.

Alexis Colon of Oceanside was found lying mortally wounded by gunfire in the roadway in the 1400 block of Higgins Street shortly after 10:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Paramedics tried in vain to revive Colon before pronouncing him dead at the scene, OPD spokesman Tom Bussey said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting remained unclear as of midday Tuesday.

"Detectives from the (OPD) Crimes of Violence Unit responded to the scene to take over this investigation," Bussey said. "This incident is being investigated as a homicide, and no further details are being released at this time."
