Randy Jones Invitational Champs Win $10K for Carlsbad High School Choirs
Jeff Brandt, Chris Freeman, Tyler Lyons, and Michael Mehran, win big for the CHS Choral Boosters at the RJI Golf Tournament at Torrey Pines

The Randy Jones Invitational is a unique championship golf tournament that encourages and rewards participation in charity golf tournaments throughout San Diego County. This one-of-a-kind tournament is by invitation only. In order to be invited, teams must finish in 1st, 2nd or 3rd place in one of the hundreds of charity golf tournaments held in and around the county. These teams are split into one of eleven semi-final tournaments, and they get to play for free at Sycuan. The top 3 teams from each semi-final tournament qualify to play in the two day Championship at Torrey Pines.
Two foursomes played on behalf of the Carlsbad High School Choral Boosters in the finals at Torrey Pines on February 21 & 22, 2015. Joe Raftery, Brad Munro, Bill Baker and Hannah Durette’s team shot a 123. The foursome made up of Jeff Brandt, Chris Freeman, Tyler Lyons, and Michael Mehran, shot an impressive 115 to take the first place title, winning the grand prize charity check in the amount of $10,000 for the Carlsbad High School Choral Boosters. Carlsbad High School choir student, Nikayli Tomaselli, graciously accepted the check on behalf of the CHS Choral Boosters and CHS Vocal Music Department. She also shared with the crowd that three of the choirs had just won first place in their divisions earlier that weekend. At the awards banquet after the tournament, each member of the winning foursome received a trophy and a golf escape that includes airfare, hotel accommodations, and golf at the world famous links at Pebble Beach. Each of their names will also be engraved on the Randy Jones Invitational perpetual trophy that is displayed at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park. “We’re excited to have won such a competitive tournament, “ said player, Jeff Brandt. “We’re especially thankful that the kids in the CHS Choirs will get a big financial boost out of it. Sage Beverages sponsored us at the original Carlsbad Choral Boosters Tournament in September, and then Taylor Made stepped in to cover our entry fees into the later qualifying stages and the final. Thanks to Sage Beverages and Taylor Made for making it all happen!”
CHS Choral Director, Mr. Jessie Bullock, stated, “I am so thankful for this very generous donation. The students of the choir program will benefit greatly from these funds. This ensures that all of our groups will be able to attend all of the planned festivals and competitions this year. This is a huge weight off our shoulders and will definitely help me sleep better at night!” Ms. Deborah Dodaro, co-president of the CHS Choral Boosters was overwhelmed and immediately logged on to the Randy Jones facebook page to thank the golfers and Mr. Jones. This donation comes at a critical time as current fundraising efforts have fallen short of years past. This win means so much to all of the students in Carlsbad High School’s Vocal Music Program.
