In the video, the man calls for a "gun squad" and encourages people to bring weapons — including guns, batons and mace — to a purported three-day protest this weekend in Carlsbad.

"These looters and rioters need to watch out if they come for my city," the text in the video states.

A number of people reported the threatening messages and video to Carlsbad police, prompting investigations by the department and the District Attorney's Office, according to the city.

"The city of Carlsbad cannot comment and will not comment on the details of investigations, but please know that we are actively engaged in assessing all potential threats," City Manager Scott Chadwick said in his newsletter Friday.

"We currently do not expect anything but peaceful protest activity in Carlsbad. And, we have plans in place in the event that changes. Our goal is to maintain a safe environment for all."
