San Diego Tennis Team Defeats Springfield

The San Diego Aviators won the first three sets, then withstood the Springfield Lasers comeback attempt in a 22-19 victory.

CARLSBAD, CA -- The San Diego Aviators won the first three sets, then withstood the Springfield Lasers comeback attempt in a 22-19 victory Sunday night in a World Team Tennis match at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa.

Ryan Harrison opened the match with a 5-2 men's singles victory over Benjamin Becker, who is not related to his fellow German Boris Becker. Shelby Rogers defeated Pauline Parmentier in women's singles, 5-3, and Harrison teamed with Raven Klaasen for a 5-3 victory over Becker and Jean Anderson in men's doubles, giving the Aviators a 15-8 lead.

Michaella Krajicek and Parmentier defeated Darija Jurak and Rogers, 5-4, in women's doubles. Becker and Krajicek won the first four games of mixed doubles and defeated Klaasen and Jurak, 5-2, cutting the Aviators lead to 21- 18.

Under World TeamTennis rules, if the trailing team wins the final set, the match continues until the leading team wins one game, or the match is tied.

Becker held serve to begin extended play. Klaasen then held serve for the Aviators (5-2), extending their winning streak to three matches.

The Aviators are scheduled to play host to the Philadelphia Freedoms (4- 3), Monday at 7 p.m. at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa. The Aviators share the lead in the six-team league with the Orange County Breakers, while the Freedoms are third. The Aviators are 5-0 at home.
