The San Diego Aviators lost the final two sets after winning the first three in a 21-19 loss Wednesday to the Washington Kastles.

CARLSBAD, CA — The San Diego Aviators lost the final two sets after winning the first three in a 21-19 loss Wednesday to the Washington Kastles in a World TeamTennis match at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

San Diego (1-2) led 15-11 entering the fourth set, women's singles, which the Aviators Christina McHale lost to Bernarda Pera, 5-3, including having her serve broken in the final game.
Jonny O'Mara and Nicole Melichar of the Aviators lost the final set, mixed doubles, 5-1 to Marcelo Arevalo and Arina Rodionova.

O'Mara double faulted twice in the opening game, which the Aviators lost. Arevalo then held serve for Washington (2-0), tying the match, 18-18.

Melichar held serve for the Aviators in the next game, but it would be the final game they would win, as Rodionova held serve and O'Mara had his serve broken a second time.
Arevalo served out the set at love.

Ryan Harrison opened the match for the Aviators with a 5-4 victory over Tommy Paul in men's singles, winning the tiebreaker, 5-2.

Under WTT rules, the first player or doubles team to win five games wins the set, one less than traditional tennis. A set is decided in a nine- point tiebreaker if it is tied 4-4.

Melichar and CoCo Vandeweghe won their third women's doubles set in three matches, defeating Pera and Rodionova, 5-3.

Harrison and O'Mara defeated Arevalo and Nick Monroe, 5-4, in the third set, men's doubles, winning the tiebreaker 5-0.

World TeamTennis is scheduled to play its entire season at The Greenbrier resort after the league concluded the coronavirus outbreak made it impossible for teams to complete the necessary air travel to and from its nine cities.

Capacity at Center Court at Creekside is limited to 500, 20% capacity, with spacing between seated groups as well as mandatory masks and temperature checks at the entrance.

Players are required to wear masks in the hotel on the walk from the hotel to the court. They are prohibited from going into the resort's casino.
