At least five spot fires in Vista Monday evening caused closure of a stretch of westbound state Route 78 and apartments to be evacuated.

VISTA, CA — At least five spot fires in Vista Monday evening caused closure of a stretch of westbound state Route 78 and apartments to be evacuated.

The evacuations began around 10:30 p.m., according to Lt. Mike Rand of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The fires were ignited near Sycamore Avenue along state Route 78, Rand said.

The cause of the fires was not immediately known.

A spot fire is created by embers or flying sparks from a larger fire.
