TransWorld Surf Magazine to Become Online Only; Some Jobs to Be Lost

The move follows the May sale of the Carlsbad publication to GrindMedia, of San Clemente.

TransWorld Surf, a long-time surfing magazine is moving to become an online-only publication, reports NBCSanDiego.com.

GrindMedia of San Clemente bought the magazine last month, according to the report, but it's unclear what effect the change will have on TransWorld Surf's Carlsbad offices.

Jobs have been offered to some of those who are employed, but others will not be retained, the report notes.

Transworld Business also reported on the development and commenters on the story were very dismayed.

“This is a totally bad idea,” said TaraLynne Mulkey-Smith of Carlsbad.

“TWSurf is the best of the three mainstream US surf print magazines,” another poster, from Maine, wrote, citing the publication's new-age approach and humor.

GrindMedia also publishes Surf, Surfing and SUP. The final print edition of TransWorld Surf is set for September. It launched in 1999. GrindMedia bought the brand from Bonnier Corp. in Florida.
