Annual Apple Festival in Hayward Slated for September 12
Festival goes on despite crop theft
The popular Apple Festival at Garin/Dry Creek Pioneer Regional Park in Hayward will be held on Saturday, September 12 from noon to 4:00 p.m. The annual event to celebrate the harvest season and the region’s agricultural heritage hit a snag this year when heirloom apples were stolen off the trees by thieves who cut through a park fence to enter the orchard.
According to the San Jose Mercury News, event coordinators at the East Bay Regional Park District expect to have enough apples for tasting, but not enough for people to take home, as in past years. Park officials are considering the use of security cameras to protect future crops of the 300 tree grove.
The free, family-oriented festival offers visitors the opportunity to sample heirloom apple varieties, try hand-cranked ice cream, press apple cider along with the music, dancing, crafts and games of the region’s early pioneer days. The event will be held at the Garin Barn Visitors Center, 1320 Garin Avenue, Hayward.
