Castro Valley High School Teacher Named District Teacher of the Year

HAYWARD, Calif. - The Alameda County Office of Education is proud to announce the district winners for this year's Teacher of the Year award. 

Eighteen districts and two Regional Occupational Programs selected teachers for excellence in classroom instruction and commitment to their students. 

Of the district winners, one teacher will be named the Alameda County Teacher of the Year and will advance to the state competition. 

Last year's Alameda County Teacher of the Year I'Asha Warfield won the state competition and represented California at the national level.

"Congratulations to this year's district Teacher of the Year award recipients. I applaud these teachers for their commitment to quality education and innovative teaching and learning strategies to meet the diverse needs of our students, especially during the shift to new standards and assessments and changes to school funding," said Sheila Jordan, Superintendent of Alameda County Schools. "I also recognize and thank all of the faculty and staff who make a difference in the lives of our students and community."

 The Alameda County district winners will be honored and recognized for their achievements at the 24th Annual Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony on October 3, 2013 at the Castro Valley Center for the Arts. 

This year's theme, Planting the Seed of Success, celebrates the important role teachers play in student growth and development in the classroom and in life. The event is open to the public; registration details will become available in the fall at acoe.org.

The twenty 2013 Teacher of the Year district winners are:

• Eden Area ROP - Deborah Maynard, San Leandro High School
• Emery USD - Dr. Carol Balfe, Anna Yates Elementary School
• Fremont USD - Judy Cuturrufo, Oliveira Elementary School
