Castro Valley Residents Asked to 'Spare The Air' on Tuesday

It will be hot and smoggy.

A Spare The Air alert has been called for today. A high pressure system over California will produce clear skies, light winds, and triple-digit inland temperatures, according to a statement from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

“A spell of extremely hot wether this week is expected to bring smoggy conditions to the Bay Area,” said Jack Broadbent, executive officer of the Air District. “Motor vehicle exhaust is the number one source of smog-forming pollution, so we’re asking Bay Area residents to share rides, take transit, bike or walk to help keep pollution levels down so that we can all breathe easier.”

The District is asking residents to avoid driving alone on Tuesday and instead walk, bike, carpool or take public transit to cut down on pollution from vehicle exhaust. In addition, residents are advised to avoid physical activity during the hottest parts of the day.

Smog can lead to throat irritation, congestion, chest pain, asthma attacks and can worsen bronchitis or emphysema, according to the air district.

District officials say high levels of ozone pollution are particularly harmful for young children, seniors and those with respiratory and heart conditions. Vigorous outdoor exercise should be undertaken only in the early morning hours when ozone concentrations are lower.
