Community Rallies to Raise Money For CHP Officer, Family With Special Needs Child

The family has been hit with a series of setbacks. Another CHP officer has set up a GoFundMe account for him.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — Sixteen years ago, Bruce and Angel Josslin of Castro Valley had their first child, Cambria. Their baby girl was diagnosed with a massive brain tumor. She survived surgery but was left with major developmental and health issues. The couple went on to have two healthy children.

Bruce joined the CHP in 2001, post 9-11.

After living in a two bedroom, one bathroom home for years, the couple purchased a larger home a few years ago. It was remodeled to accommodate Cambria's special needs. Last year, the older home needed a new main sewer line which cost about $25,000. Bruce borrowed against his retirement to pay for it. Now, the HVAC system went out and asbestos was found throughout the system. The abatement and replacement cost will run over $30,000.

Over the past 15 years, Bruce has never asked for any handouts even though he is the sole provider for his family. This pushed him over the edge.

A fellow CHP officer started a GoFundMe account for the Josslins, writing, "This new challenge has been a little overwhelming for the Josslins’ as they had to tell their kids they would have to forego Christmas as well as their son's birthday. Our local CHP family quickly raise just over $1,000.00 to make Christmas a little brighter for the Josslins and were able to help with their son's birthday."

The goal for the fund in $20,000. Donors have been generous and have exceeded the goal, but more is needed to cover the cost of the HVAC.

Bruce Josslin wrote a heartfelt note Wednesday, in response to the donations, "We are so grateful to be surrounded by so many who love and care for us and wish we could hug and thank each of you in person. Thank you for your service, your love, and assistance in time of need. We have been truly blessed by your kindness."
