Get Paid To Recycle Your Mattress In The East Bay

EAST BAY — Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley, and the Mattress Recycling Council, announced Thursday that they will expand their partnership to offer a rebate to people who recycle a mattress.

Habitat for Humanity and the MRC will offer a $3 payment or a $5 credit at Habitat for Humanity's ReStore for each mattress a person recycles and up to five mattresses per vehicle, per day. Appointments may be made for more than 5 mattresses.

According to the MRC, a group formed by the mattress industry, the collaboration is intended to curb the number of mattress that are dumped illegally.

"Over the last five years, we've worked diligently with local leaders to mitigate illegal dumping and make mattress recycling easy for Oakland residents and businesses," MRC managing director Mike O'Donnell said.

MRC's mattress recycling programs in California, Connecticut and Rhode Island — states that have mattress recycling laws — collect more than 1.5 million mattresses per year that may otherwise be illegally dumped, according to the organization.

In addition to the ReStore operating as a donation center, its proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity's efforts to build affordable housing.

"We're excited that this consumer incentive will raise more awareness, divert more waste, beautify our community and help Habitat build more affordable homes," Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley President and CEO Janice Jensen said.

East Bay residents can drop off mattresses and box springs at ReStore, located at 1419 34th Ave., Oakland, CA 94601, between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday without an appointment.

Drop-off appointments are required for drop-offs of five or more mattresses.
