Jenny Lin Foundation Music Program Free to All Youth Starts 6/17
We welcome youth entering 7th grade and up. 25th anniversary program features premiere of Richard Meyer-composed string orchestra piece.
For the 25th summer, Jenny Lin Foundation offers a music program free of charge to all young people in the Bay Area. Instrumental musicians entering 9th grade or higher are welcomed to join the Symphonic Band (directed by Greg Conway) or Symphonic Orchestra (directed by Cary Nasatir); students entering 7th grade and up may register for the Choral program (directed by Diana Ryan).
Participants meet Monday and Wednesday evenings for six weeks starting June 17. Rehearsals take place at Proctor Elementary School, Castro Valley (17520 Redwood Rd.) and culminate with a large-scale community concert at Chabot College Performing Arts Center in Hayward, on Saturday, July 27.
Based in Castro Valley, the Jenny Lin Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1994 after the brutal murder of 14-year-old Jenny Lin. Operated through volunteers and donation, the Foundation promotes child safety and youth music education, and has sponsored many music and safety events over the years for the East Bay communities. One current project is a partnership with the Alameda County Library to expand its collection of books related to child safety issues. Fremont Main Library was the latest beneficiary following branches in Castro Valley, San Lorenzo and Union City. Anyone wishing to look up these items from the catalog may search using the subject Jenny Lin Foundation.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the Foundation's summer program, renowned composer and music educator Richard Meyer wrote an emotional and heartfelt piece of music From Darkness, Joyful Sounds are Born. While the world premiere of Meyer's original work will be performed at the milestone concert, in future any ensemble performing the piece anywhere in the world will help share Jenny’s story. It is the Foundation's hope that through Jenny's passion—music—our ongoing mission and vision of child safety will be able to reach more young people than ever before.
