Ohlone Sports: Softball Caps Week With Gusto; Baseball Leads Way

Renegades pitcher Karen Didio packs wallop from plate and circle

The Ohlone College softball team capped a second consecutive week with a rousing doubleheader sweep, this time besting visiting Solano 11-3 and 6-1 on April 6.

The previous week, Ohone took two from Mendocino by a combined 20-3 to wrap up the week.
The Renegades, who have won five of their last six, also split games last week in conference play, beating Hartnell 5-1 on April 2 and falling 5-4 to San Jose on April 4.
In the 11-3 rout of Solano, Lauryn Garcia and Alynna Ramirez led the way with four RBIs apiece. Garcia belted a home run and Ramirez was 2 for 3 with a double. Leadoff Gabby Moreno was 3 for 3 with three runs scored. Karen Didio, who went the distance for the win, was 2 for 4 with a double.
In the 6-1 over Solano, Ana Beard went seven innings and fired a two-hitter, allowing only one unearned run. Didio had two hits, including a triple. Arrianna Whitlock had a double and two RBIs. Brooke Niewoehner was a tidy 2 for 2 with two runs scored. Beard helped her own cause with two RBIs.
In the 5-1 win over Hartnell, Didio was Di-dominant. She fired a six hitter, striking out five and walking none. She was also 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Leadoff Moreno was a scintillating 3 for 4 with a triple and two runs scored and an RBI. Niewoehner was 2 for 4 and Ramirez, the catcher, was 2 for 4.
In the heartbreaking 5-4 defeat to San Jose, Moreno, who had a big week from the plate, was 3 for 4 with a run and an RBI, and Whitlock had two RBIs. Unfortunately for Ohlone (17-15, 5-5 Coast-North), San Jose scored five in the bottom of the seventh to prevail.
BASEBALL
The Renegades (25-6, 8-1 Coast-Pacific) enter the week with a three-game lead in the conference after taking two of three from a solid Cabrillo (17-12, 5-4). The Renegades prevailed 12-9 on April 1, 8-1 on April 4 and fell 3-2 on April 6 in Aptos. The close loss snapped Ohlone’s 37-game conference win streak.
In the 12-9 win, Ohlone took command with a six-run rally in the top of the seventh inning. Brett Tressen, Dalton Vanhille and Bradley Norton paced the offense with three hits apiece. Tressen, who doubled, also had three RBIs and two runs scored. Zach Patterson had two hits, including a double.
In the 8-1 victory, Vanhille was 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Norton slugged a home run and four Renegades had doubles: Justin Clark, Tressen, Vanhille and Matt Benavidez. Winning pitcher Ryan Robinson (5-0) was stellar allowing just five hits and no runs over 7.0 innings, striking out four and walking one.
In the 3-2 loss, Clark and Luke O’Brien had two hits apiece. Starter Andrew Amato allowed eight hits and three earned runs over 7.0 innings.
NEXT LEVEL: Former Ohlone standout Ryan Walstad stole home in Sacramento State’s win over CSU Bakersfield. He’s hitting .302 on the season. Cal State Fullerton junior AJ Curtis is batting .294.
