Suspect In Stolen Vehicle Drives Toward CHP Officers: Report
One officer was injured on a spike strip, but did not require hospitalization.

HAYWARD, CA —A California Highway Patrol officer was injured early Thursday morning in Hayward when a suspect in a stolen car allegedly drove towards the officer.
According to CHP Officer Joseph Fowler, officers were stopped at a traffic light in the area of Tarman Avenue and Jackson Street at 2:30 a.m. when a passerby approached the officers and reported someone sleeping behind the wheel in a nearby silver Toyota.
The officers ran the Toyota's license plate number and discovered it was stolen.

The officers then approached the vehicle and placed spike strips in front of its wheels to avoid the suspect fleeing. After waking the driver and contacting him to ask him to step out of the vehicle, the driver allegedly drove towards the officers as if to hit them, Fowler said.
One officer fired a single shot, but the suspect fled in the stolen vehicle. It wasn't immediately clear if suspect or his vehicle was struck by gunfire.

In an attempt to move out of the way of the incoming vehicle, an officer suffered a minor injury from the spike strip. He was treated at the scene, and did not need to be taken to a hospital.
The suspect remains outstanding and the CHP is continuing to investigate, according to Fowler.
