Driver Rescued From Sinkhole Following Water Main Break

The break was reported Wednesday during an intense storm.

CASTRO VALLEY, CA — A water main break in Castro Valley has forced the closure of Somerset Avenue, between Santa Maria and Redwood Road.

A car got stuck in a sinkhole caused by the water main break. The driver was safely rescued by Alameda County firefighters.

The break was on a 12-inch cast iron water main. The failure left 51 customers without running water.

East Bay MUD, Alameda County Public Works, firefighters and the CHP all worked to secure and repair the scene.
