Chick-fil-A Coming to Westwood Village

A Chick-fil-A will replace the Burger King restaurant on Westwood Boulevard in March, The Daily Bruin reports.

The Atlanta-based fast food chain has signed a lease for a space in the building on the corner of Westwood Boulevard and Le Conte Avenue. The university bought the building at 900 Westwood Boulevard in June for $72 million, according to The Daily Bruin.

Chick-fil-A made headlines last month when Dan Cathy, the chain's president, publicly expressed opposition on same-sex marriage.

Steve Ritea, a UCLA spokesman, told The Daily Bruin the university does not support Cathy's statements. The lease was signed with the building's previous owner at the end of April — two months before UCLA purchased the building and about three months before Cathy's comments went viral.

"While UCLA does not support the recent statements by Chick-fil-A's CEO, we cannot legally discriminate based on one's point of view," a statement from UCLA said. "UCLA is dedicated to respecting everyone's right to free speech in order to preserve the free and open exchange of ideas on campus. With that in mind, we recognize that members of the community may express their opinions regarding the Chick-fil-A CEO's statements, and we fully respect their right to do so publicly."
