Motorcyclist Crashes Into Car on 405 Freeway

A motorcyclist suffered severe injuries today on the San Diego (405) Freeway in Westwood when an unknown object struck the rear of his bike, forcing him to hit the back of a motorist, lose control and crash, a California Highway Patrol spokesperson said.

It was not immediately known whether the motorcyclist's injuries were considered life-threatening. Paramedics rushed him to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, said CHP Officer Monica Posada.

The crash on the southbound freeway, just north of Wilshire Boulevard, was reported to the CHP at 6:28 a.m., Posada said. The motorcyclist was going about 65 miles per hour in the No. 1 lane when an unknown object struck the rear of his bike, causing him to lose control and strike the right rear of a vehicle. The motorcyclist and his bike fell across the number one lane of the freeway, she said. The motorist, unable to stop because of freeway construction, continued further down the road until he was able to contact a CHP officer, Posada said. He was uninjured.

She said the motorcycle sustained some rear damage. It was not immediately known what kind of object struck the rear of the motorcycle. Posada said the CHP officer in charge of the crash still "needs to talk to more witnesses. He's still investigating the collision."
