- Two men were wounded in a freeway shooting on the Artesia (91) Freeway in nearby Bellflower, leaving traffic snarled for miles as a result a massive freeway closure. Read all about it in our article.

- Five people in Los Angeles County tested positive for West Nile virus, making them the county's first human cases of the 2013 season, according to the county Department of Public Health. Two adults who tested positive were hospitalized but are recovering. The other three were blood donors who never became ill.
